Event description

Academic publishing is a global phenomenon. Knowledge co-creation across continents has the potential to seek solutions to global challenges. However, the global publishing industry and global publishing practices also exacerbate persisting inequalities between Global North and Global South based researchers. Where open access publishing shifts costs from readers to authors, the required article processing fees may drive researchers from resource poor settings to publish in low-quality or predatory journals. North-South co-authoring may lead to publishing in outlets with paywalls and out of reach for locally relevant stakeholders decreasing the potential impact of the research conducted.

This webinar will discuss the global research publishing landscape and explore alternatives to avoid reproducing global inequalities in research co-authorship across continents. The aim is to provide the audience with ideas and practical advice on how to promote equitable practices in academic collaboration and avoid harmful practices.

Key questions include:

  • Does the global publishing industry provide all researchers with equal opportunities to inform their research and be recognized for their achievements?

  • Does the pressure to publish in prestigious journals lead to tensions in research collaborations?

  • How does the global publishing industry impact researcher assessment and career development in different settings?

  • How can partners bridge the prevailing North-South gap perpetuated by the global publishing industry?
