Dissertation: Reliability and sustainability analyses of frugal solar photovoltaic micro-grid systems in emerging markets (to be published in 2019)
Research summary
The doctoral research project targets to understand the relevance of frugal and affordable energy innovations in sustainable energy transitions among low-income communities in emerging economies. The target technology is solar micro-grids in India. The various related sustainability challenges are studied as well as the role of distributed energy in the country's energy mix among rural energy users. Key methods include field trials, interviews, data analysis and sustainability and reliability assessments.
Description
The dissertation includes an analysis of functionality, practical relevance and challenges of stand-alone solar micro-grids in rural northern India. The technology studied is analysed particularly from the user perspective and for its technical reliability. The dissertation offers unique evidence on the practical problems faced when deploying new and advanced energy systems in extremely low-income communities in India.
