VitalSens - Platform technology for affordable, continuous health monitoring

Research summary

VitalSens is a joint research project with the main goal of designing a smart, cost effective and scale-able personalized biomedical remote monitoring health platform. Printable wireless electronic sensors for continuous ECG monitoring are designed. Further, the ECG recordings are stored in a cloud storage. We then proceed by developing a computational engine which processes the physiological measurements and provide automated event detection for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The primary focus is to create an intelligent processing system which is adaptive to the patient ECG recording.

Description

Background:
The measurement of vital signs such as pulse and breath sounds has been the cornerstone of medical practice since time immemorial. Professional clinical practice and accurate diagnosis hinges on clear understanding of the current health condition of the subject. This begins with accurate and reliable measurement of essential vital signs such as pulse, body temperature, heart rate, breathing rate, etc.

Goal:
To develop minimally obtrusive health monitoring technology and demonstrate it in cardiovascular patient monitoring.

Need:
Advances in information and communication technology allows for accurate, reliable estimation of vital parameters, thereby making continued vitals monitoring an integral part of medicine. Recent advancements in mobile computing and widespread connectivity have opened hitherto unforeseen possibilities for remote health monitoring and value added clinical services in many application areas. While connectivity-enabled technology solutions for health monitoring have traditionally focused on well-being applications outside of clinical settings, there has been very little penetration of these in a hospital setting.

Desired Outputs:
Unobtrusive monitoring of vital signs
Production of good quality health data
Reliable and automated data analysis methods
Affordable healthcare made accessible to everyone through digitalization.
