Private Agricultural Investments and Land Use Change Impact on The Adaptive Capacity of Local Communities to Climate Change in Mozambique -PAIMO-

Research summary

Land-use changes through private agricultural investments have an impact on local communities and their adaptive capacity towards climate change in several ways. Changes in the use of forests change the livelihood possibilities and the availability of ecosystem services. In this project, the adaptive capacity of local communities to land use changes in Mozambique is studied by:

- Mapping of private investments in Mozambique

- Studying the changes in livelihood and availability of ecosystem services in the neighbourhood of selected investment sites

- Evaluating the effect of selected private agricultural investment on the adaptive capacity of local communities to climate change

- Estimating the change in carbon stocks as a result of land use change and the reallocation of local communities to new areas.

Description

Methods and material
1. To map the private agricultural investments in Mozambique:
Investments will be classified by the type (forest plantation, livestock plantation, biofuels), by the geographical site, by accessibility (roads) and other background factors (economic structure in the region) as well as the type of land.

2. Compare the impacts of selected private agricultural investments in terms of local communities livelihoods and adaptive capacity:
Tree to four investment sites are selected for this phase. In the neighbourhood of each investment site, a survey will be conducted to study the changes in the livelihood of local communities.

3. Evaluate the effects of selected private agricultural investment on the adaptive capacity of local communities to climate change:
The project will use the CRiSTAL –tool (Community-based Risk Screening Tool - Adaptation & Livelihoods; for assessing vulnerability and adaptive capacity.

4. Estimate the change in carbon stocks as a result of land use change and the reallocation of local communities to new areas:
Aboveground biomass and carbon stocks estimations. Tree volume and biomass will be estimated in a sample plot taking into account total height and dbh and using allometric functions.
