Salla Atkins

Associate professor

  • Institution Tampere University
  • Department/faculty Faculty of Social Science/ Health Sciences

Salla Atkins is a social scientist and professor of Public Health (especially Global Health) at the Faculty of Social Sciences. She is also a research specialist at the department of Global Public Health Sciences at Karolinska Institutet. For the past 16 years Salla has researched issues related to the social determinants of health, poverty, inequity, health systems and policy in low, middle, and high-income countries. Her interest is in mixed-methods and register research, especially multisectoral interventions to improve health and life course effects of social inequalities. Salla has coordinated large EU projects during her postdoctoral work and currently has projects in Finland in addition to collaborations with partners in Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, India, and South Africa on various projects related to health equity. Her work is situated in the space between international, national and regional policy, and individual lives.

Samuel Awini

Doctoral Research Fellow

  • Institution University of Helsinki
  • Department/faculty Biological and Environmental Sciences

I am studying the role of African elephants in climate change by examining their feeding impacts on vegetation and above-ground carbon dynamics. My research aims to identify demographic and habitat degradation thresholds that could shift their ecosystem role from carbon accumulators to carbon releasers, while also addressing misconceptions about the two African elephant species and their hybrids. As elephants face increasing threats from poaching and escalating human-elephant conflict (HEC) across their range, my work further explores any synergies or trade-offs between climate change mitigation and conservation efforts, and how these are linked to HEC. Taiwo Temitope Bamgboye

Doctoral Researcher

  • Institution University of Oulu
  • Department/faculty Water Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit

My name is Bamgboye Taiwo Temitope. I am a doctoral researcher at the Water Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit of the University of Oulu, Finland. My research interests include climate change, urban water, energy and food nexus planning, integrated water resource management; policy analysis in developing countries; and interactions with other SDGs to create a more sustainable future and a balanced ecosystem

Niti Bhan

Doctoral Student

  • Institution Aalto University School of Engineering
  • Department/faculty Interdisciplinary Innovation and Development

Niti's research interests lie in the intersection between design methods, knowledge systems particularly local, traditional and indigenous knowledges, and participatory social design-driven transformation. She is currently exploring the relationship between post-colonial indigenous research paradigms (Chilisa 2019) and integrated product development strategies for holistic knowledge production that implements cognitive justice (Visvanathan 1997; 2021) for research at the Cultural Interface (Nakata 1997, 2007; Durie 2005). Over 30 years of professional creative practice in design and innovation. This includes 15 years of leading interdisciplinary teams for fieldwork using design anthropology methodologies (rapid ethnography, indepth interviews, day in the life, observations and shadowing in markets, farms, villages, borderlands and more). Fieldwork personally completed in South Africa, The Philippines, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and with local assistance in Benin and Malawi. Networks span the African continent. Public recognition of original knowledge production includes Invitation to mainstage of TED Global 2017 in Arusha Tanzania TEDTalk video https://www.ted.com/talks/niti_bhan_the_hidden_opportunities_of_the_informal_economy

Aina Brias Guinart

Doctoral candidate

  • Institution University of Helsinki
  • Department/faculty Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences

My research explores the links between education and biodiversity conservation. I am particularly interested in how conservation NGOs implement education programmes in rural communities in Madagascar and how they affect local cultures, environments and knowledge systems. I have mainly been doing qualitative research using interviews, focus groups and participant observation as methodologies.

Projects

Unpacking the role of education as a tool for biodiversity conservation

  • Institution University of Jyväskylä
  • Department/faculty Information Technology

My name is Weiyi Feng. I am a PhD student in Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä. My research interests primarily focus on 1.The application of AI in STEAM education, focusing on the impact of generative assessment tools on student learning motivation and a comparison between human and machine assessment; 2.Educational equity and teacher professional development, focusing on the professional challenges and identity construction of female STEM teachers in international contexts. Several empirical studies have been conducted in related fields, aiming to explore educational equity and assessment justice under the intervention of technology.

Sergio Fernandez Bravo

Doctoral researcher

  • Institution University of Helsinki
  • Department/faculty Global Development Studies

My work is concerned with the relationship between power and knowledge, reflected in the dynamic between science and politics. I study the role of science and technology in global development projects, through multidisciplinary historical analysis. My current research focuses on the epistemic and political mechanisms underlying the use of pesticides in Mexican agriculture during the 20th century.

Jeremy Gould

Researcher/Professor

  • Institution University of Helsinki
  • Department/faculty Social Sciences

Anthropologist with a specialization in long-term social change in postcolonial Africa. Recent work focuses on the interaction between law and politics in state formation.
