Course content

The course provides tools for understanding sexuality, gender and identity in the changing Nordic landscapes. The course evolves by building bridges between personal experiences, activism and academic discussions. The focus in the discussions will be on the following themes:

  • Queering history and tradition
  • Identity politics
  • Survival strategies
  • Belonging and exclusion
  • Islamic feminism, being muslim and queer

The course will mainly take place online, with three face-to-face meetings that are compulsory (travel costs of attendance will be covered). The course will be in English. It runs for 8 weeks and equals 5 ECTS. Participation in the course will give access to the library of the University of Helsinki as well as the databases and Moodle platform. Participants will receive a course diploma with successful compilation of the course.

Participants

  • Maximum amount of participants: 24

  • Priority to gender and sexual minorities who are asylum seekers or recently granted asylum. In addition a few Gender Studies students from Finnish universities will be attending.

Requirements for participants

  • The ability to use a computer with internet connection 2-4 times a week and access the Moodle online learning platform (instructions will be provided). 
  • Opportunity to study between 18 September and 3 October 2017.
  • No previous university studies are required.

Program

  • 1st week: Orientation
  • 2nd week: Gender studies 101
  • 3rd week: Queering History and tradition
  • 4th week: Religion and faith; example: Being muslim and queer. History of queer in muslim world pre-colonial era. Islamic feminismi, reformist islamic views on gender and sexuality
  • 5th week: Othering, belonging, exclusion, racialization
  • 6th week: Identity, identity politics
  • 7th week: New identities in Nordic Landscapes: Survival strategies and situated tactics
Learning methods

Reading academic texts, blog texts, comics, written participation in discussion and other assignments.
