The multidisciplinary University Of Oulu is one of the largest universities in Finland. There are several inter-faculty, specialized research units. The University of Oulu will focus on four research areas in the future. These include biosciences and health, information technology, cultural identity and communication as well as the environment and natural resources. High-level research includes long term basic research and applied research, on which development work is based.

The University of Oulu cooperates with the University of Namibia on a project aiming to support the education of kindergarten and elementary school teachers. In addition, the Faculty of Medicine supports the education of doctors in Namibia.
