University of Jyväskylä focuses on human and natural sciences and is Finland’s leading university in teacher training, adult education and exporting education. The university’s values include promoting economically, socially and ecologically sustainable development. The university has significant cooperation with actors in developing countries and it also offers a multidisciplinary Master’s programme in Development and International Cooperation.

The Department of Music, with Professor Jukka Louhivuori and Lecturer Pekka Toivanen, have been cooperating with South Africa, Kenya and Botswana for several years. The North-South-South projects have focused on developing multicultural music education and music’s national significance.

Professor Laura Stark from the Department of History and Ethnology leads a project funded by the Academy of Finland, where the effects of mobile technology on gender equality are examined. The project also aims to find ways to use mobile phones to solve health issues.

In addition, the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy is part of the EUSA-ID Erasmus Mundus Network, which will provide funding for 34 South African Master’s and doctoral students to study Development Studies in European universities from 2014 to 2017.
