University of Eastern Finland’s strengths include research and teaching relating to forests and the environment, health and well-being as well as new technologies and materials. The university has partnership agreements with the UN’s Environment Programme and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

The university also has many development cooperation projects. The Faculty of Health Sciences has a project for developing teaching on public health in Egypt, Tanzania and Kenya.

University of Eastern Finland’s educational technology research group and Tanzania’s Tumaini University have been developing a Bachelor’s degree programme in IT. The research group is led by Professor Erkki Sutinen.

The same research group is also coordinating an online-based doctoral programme in education technology called IMPDET-LE (International Multidisciplinary PhD Studies in Educational Technology & Learning Environments). In the programme, doctoral students from different countries can tackle locally relevant issues without having to go abroad.
