Food and Nutrition Security

Food and Nutrition Security is achieved when people everywhere and at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food in order to maintain a healthy life. Food security includes both physical and economic access to food in sufficient quantities on an ongoing basis, the resources needed in order to access a nutritious diet, and the application of basic nutrition and sanitation knowledge. The EU-Africa High Level Policy Dialogue on Science Technology and Innovation has prioritized Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture in R&I collaboration between the two regions. More information on this cooperation can be found on the Roadmap on EU-Africa Research and Innovation in Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture and RINEA website. A portal for Africa-EU STI cooperation.

Health is the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not just the absence of disease or infirmity. Human health and sustainable development are comprehensively interlinked. Quality of the environment and the nature of development are major contributors of health. Health is a building block to most all other aspects of development. Cooperation in Research and Innovation between the two regions in health is visible through projects like the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership EDCTP. Climate Change

Climate Change encompasses changes in the climate that are attributed directly (or indirectly) to human activity and alter the composition of the global atmosphere. Limiting the effects of climate change is a crucial consideration in order to develop in a sustainable manner. Climate change could exacerbate environmental problems by adversely affecting water supplies and increasing the frequency of drought. Cooperation on Climate Change with the two regions is highlighted in priority 5 of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy.

Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is an inexhaustible source of energy that replenishes itself naturally (such as solar, wind, wave, biomass, geothermal resources etc.). Renewable energy is a tremendously important factor in limiting climate change and attributing to sustainable development. EU-Africa STI cooperation in renewable energy is supported by various initiatives like the Africa-EU Energy Partnership, RECP and EUEI-PDF

The use of ICT has become synonymous with growth emanating from Information and knowledge facilitated by technology and innovation. Information and knowledge creation, access, and sharing improve people's quality of life and enable sustainable development. The Multi-annual Financial Framework of the EU 2014-2020 highlights the priorities of the EU-Africa cooperation in ICT.

The focus of EU-Africa Cooperation in transport has especially been on road safety and traffic management. Meant to support the development of the African Road Safety Action Plan, this R&I initiative is one of the funding priorities in H2020.

The role of earth observation and environmental monitoring has been recognized as crucial in addressing food security and climate change preparedness. In the Joint Africa-EU Strategy, the regions agreed to increase collaboration through the Africa Space Policy Strategy (AfriGEOSS) and AU-EU Space Troika.
