Master's Award in Development Studies 2018 to Michel Rouleau-Dick

Michel Rouleau-Dick from Åbo Akademi has been awarded the 2018 Master's Award in Development Studies, handed out by UniPID and Finnish Society for Development Research. Rouleau-Dick’s thesis in public international law, titled Statelessness, statehood and environmentally-displaced persons: the quest for legal status, received praise from the committee for the importance of its topic and accomplished analytical approach.

In 2018, UniPID and the Finnish Society for Development Research received 16 submissions competing for this year's Master's Award in Development Studies. Five of these theses were chosen and forwarded to the emeritus committee, who made the final decisions on the theses to be awarded.

The emeritus committee who made the decision on the award consistent of three members: Olli Vainio, Ullamaija Kivikuru and Taimi Sitari. Preliminary selection committee included members from both FSDR and UniPID, and represented a variety of disciplines for a fair and unbiased process.

In addition to Rouleau-Dick, the committee decided to hand out two honorable mentions, one to Linda Sivander from University of Helsinki for her thesis Life with breaking water supply – boreholes and the governance of water in northern Uganda, belonging to the discipline of social and cultural anthropology. The other honorable mention was awarded to Erich Molz from University of Tampere for his thesis Does Intercultural Competence Matter? New Perspectives on Relationship-Building in Unarmed Civilian Protection in peace and conflict research.

The winner and honorable mentionees will receive their diplomas in an award ceremony organized in conjunction with the FSDR Development Days Conference 2019: Repositioning global development: changing actors, geographies and ontologies, which takes place from 27 February to 1 March 2019.
